Teru teru bouzu

The sports day will be held at my 6-year-old daughter's nursery school today.

But the weather forecast said that it will rain today.

We will have a 60% chance of rain this morning.

When I went to her nursery school to pick her up last evening, I found that a lot of Teru teru bouzu were under eaves.

Teru teru bozu is a small handmade doll made of white paper.

We make it before the important event in the hope that it will be a sunny day.

My children and I prayed together last night.

I explained to my daughter when we watched the weather forecast on TV:

"The low pressure is a possible cause of rain."

Then she put her small hands together and said:

"Hello Mr. low pressure, please come after our sports day finishes."

I thought how adorable she was.

A lot of little kids are looking forward to coming to the sports day and really hoping that it doesn't rain.

If it is postponed, the sports day will be held next Wednesday so that my husband and parents will not be able to come.

Please hold out until the sports day finishes!!

Thank you(^o^) for reading this article!

  1. Hello Kumi-san,

Japanese sport days are taken much more seriously in Japan than they are here. I follow a young English speaking girl who posts videos about living in Japan and she recently posted her sports day video on her G+ page. It is amazing how many people are involved and how much organization was involved:

Here is a list of some of the other issues found with the rest of the post:

    Teru teru bozu

Reason: It's right English people do tend to spell it the way shown but you could also write it as:
    Teru teru bouzu

We English people are not very good at doing the long word sounds of Japanese. As a result we often spell Japanese words incorrectly even when writing them in romaji.

Note: "In the hope that xxx" is a common expression in English. See examples:

    Examples:
I lit the fire in the hope that the smoke from the fire would be noticed.
I had not told them when I was born in the hope that they would not have a birthday party for me.
I hid all the chocolate biscuits in the hope that I would find it easier to stay healthy.
I went to sleep early in the hope that I would get plenty of sleep.

  2. Oh I forgot to mention I found a website which seems to be involved in writing about the English language for Japanese people:

    http://eigoboost.com/

I am not sure if it is too basic for someone with your English level but in case it is useful to you, see the link above.

    1. Hi Terry.
      Thank you for the corrections.

I watched the link of G+.
Yes, it is a typical Japanese sports day held at elementary school.
It's like a big event of city.
People whose children had already grwon up sometimes come to see it.

Unfortunately, the sports day of my daughter's nursery school was canceled.
      It postponded next Wednesday.
I was really disappointed because my parents will not be able to come on that day.

      Anyway, thank you so much!

    2. Sorry that you will not be able to meet with your parents on your daughters sports day. Still maybe someone can record it and send it to your parents.
