The last day of his summer vacation

It was the last day of my 7-year-old son's summer vacation yesterday.

He finally finished his homework in the morning.

He also studied math.

I decided that I let him do what he wanted to do.

After finishing study, he played games using my iPad.

I asked him:

"What do you want to eat for lunch?"

"I want to eat Ramen!"

We went to his most favorite ramen restaurant.

We enjoyed eating ramen very much.

He ate kid's lunch.

After lunch, we came home and watched the movie of Harry Potter.

After that, he said:

"I want to go to catch insects!"

We went to the shrine and the park near our house and he caught a dragonfly.

It was a windy but comfortable day.

My 6-year-old dauhgter will enter the elementary school next year, so it was the last day which we spend a day only with my son and me.

I always feel lonely when the last day of the summer vacation.

I will recall today which we enjoyed together after he grow up.

How do you spend time with your children during the summer vacation?

I took my 7-year-old son to Karate practice last night.

Since it ends 8pm, I went there to pick him up with my 6-year-old daughter.

After the practice, my son started playing tag with other boys as usual.

While waiting, I asked the mother whose son was also playing tag with my son:

"How do you spend time with your son during the summer vacation?"

She answered:

"Since my parents' home isn't very far and they have cousins there, we often go there and he plays with them."

"That's good for you! Since I go to work, my son goes to the children's house and spends his time there from 9am to 5pm."

I told her.

She looked surprised at this and asked me:

"So you have to make a lunch box every day, don't you? And how about your daughter? Does she go to the nursery school?"

"Yes. My son is like going to school every day. He does his homework there. He sometimes plays with friends, reads comics, draws pictures, and so on. Children who stay at the children's house sometimes go to school together and swim in the swimming pool."

I told her.

I am curious how other children spend their summer vacation.

Since I work even during the summer vacation, my son needs to stay at the children's house until I pick him up.

If I didn't work, I wonder how I would spend the long vacation.

The summer vacation is one and a half months, it is very long.

My son doesn't like going to the children's house very much, but I think it is good for him because he can play with friends, keep regular hours, and do his homework at the children's house.
Since many teachers take care of them, I can work with no worries.

Since I usually have a day off on Wednesdays and my husband has days off on Weekends, he can stay at home three days a week.

As for my 6-year-old daughter, she likes going to the nursery school.

She can swim in the swimming pool every day, and take a nap after lunch.

She can also play with friends until I pick her up.

She often says to me when I pick her up:

"Oh no! It's too early! I want to play with friends more!"

I always have to wait for her for more than 10 minutes.

Radio calisthenics in the early morning

My children and I joined in the radio calisthenics held by the children's association of our town yesterday morning.

Attending the radio calisthenics is one of the typical events in summer vacation for children.

When I was a child, I had to join in it for a week, but in our town, it is held only once during the summer vacation.

I have heard that it is held at the end of the summer vacation in some towns to fix children's dissolute daily rhythm.

It started at 6:30am and it was a little hard time for me to wake my children's up at 6:15am.

Since I had told them about the schedule so far, my 7-year-old son was able to wake up immediately.
But my 6-year-old daughter wanted to sleep more.

"You aren't going, are you?"

We had only 5 minutes to leave home.

"No! I'm going with you!"

She cried.

"Then wake up now and wash your face!"

We ran to the park near our house.

When we reached there, it already began and there were a lot of families.

After exercise, we weeded the park for about an hour and came home at 7:40am.

I was tired but I thought it was a good opportunity to join in our town's event.

In fact, I asked my husband to come and join instead of me at 7am because I had to go to work yesterday.

But he joined in the job training and the drinking party last Saturday and he came home at 4:30am yesterday.

"Again! What age do you act? Stop coming home in the morning without informing me! I was not able to sleep after 3am because I am anxious about you. You don't have to join in the town's weeding today. Forget it. Go to sleep now!"

It was my mistake that I asked him to join in the radio calisthenics and weeding.

I know he is a social butterfly but it is only in his business relationship.

I want him to attend such a town's event more.

Needless to say, I had a lack of energy to work all day yesterday.

The school summer vacation began!

The summer vacation began yesterday.

My 7-year-old son was glad because he didn't have to go to school.

But he has to stay at the children's house when I go to work.

Since the school lunch is not provided, I have to make a lunch box for him.

It is really annoying.

Actually, I have made my lunch box for three and a half years ( since I started working my current job.)

But making two lunch boxes is not easy for me.

My son sometimes complains about the side dish of the lunch box.

I usually put leftovers in it, but he is getting sick of my bento (lunch box).

At the end of the summer vacation last year, he said:

"I am sick of mom's bento! I want to eat the school lunch!"

I also said to him:

"Me too! I am really tired of making the lunch box for you. I do hope the school lunch will start as soon as possible!"

When I was a child, I was really happy during the summer vacation.

There were a lot of fun activities like fireworks, summer festivals, swimming pool, catching cicadas, radio callisthenics, visiting my grandparents’ house, camping, and so on.

But now as a mother, most of them make me tired, but I have to do them.

Because I know my children will surely enjoy them very much!

Who Is The Real Nature Of The Echo?

My 6-year-old son asked me last week,

"Is this true? If we shout "Yoo-hoo!" at the mountain, can we hear "Yoo-hoo" again?"

I answered,

"It's true. Oh, you have not ever been to the mountain, have you?"

Therefore, we decided to go to the mountain to experience "Yoo-hoo".

Since it took about 2 hours by car and we needed to pass through the long twisty mountain road, my children got carsick a little.

But after they reached the mountain, they recovered from it quickly.

We got on the lift to the top of the mountain.

This was the first experience for my children.

Since my husband couldn't go with us because he had to work, my 6-year-old son got the lift alone.

I worried whether he would be scared of it,  but he enjoyed it very much.

We could see the "Pink Panther" riding the lift!

After we reached the top of the mountain, I told them,

"Let's try to say "Yoo-hoo"!  Ready, set, go! "

"Yoo-hoo!"

Then we heard "Yoo- hoo"!

...But, something was different, something was strange.

We looked down from the observatory, a man who was taking care of the flowers answered his "Yoo-hoo" and shaked his hand to my son.

"Oh my goodness!"

We roared with laughter for a while.

After all we couldn't hear the echo, but it was a very funny and unforgettable happening.

Cicada catching

When we hear cicadas singing, we feel  the height of summer.

Cicadas live as larvae for many years under the ground, and they can live as imago for only for a month.

So I feel that cicadas singing are like crying of their lives.

(But many people feel that cicadas' big chorus is noisy because they sing from early morning to the sunset.)

Cicadas catching is one of the popular activities for boys in Japan.

Many insect cages and insect catching nets are sold in shops.

My 6-year-old son also loves cicada catching very much.

I went to the park near my house with my children yesterday afternoon.

There are a lot of trees there and it was easy to find many cicadas.

I caught cicadas using the insect catching net and he grabbed and put them into the insect cage.

We caught fourteen cicadas!

Since my 4-year-old daughter is scared of cicadas, she was riding a swing while we were catching cicadas.

I told my son after we caught them enough,

"Release them when we go home. Poor cicadas can live only for a short time."

"I know. I will. But I want to take four of them to the home. Can I?"

"Only two. But let's release them after you observe them. OK?"

He agreed reluctantly.

He released them saying, "Good-bye cicadas! I hope we can meet again somewhere!"

I guess that today will become one of the fun memories in summer vacation for him.

And I was impressed that he grew up a little than two years ago.

He couldn't release them because he wanted to keep them when he was 4 years old.

Then cicadas died in his cages.

I will be glad if he understand cherishing life.

Give me a break!

Since it would be still a little difficult for him to make sentences and express what he thought, I helped writing my 6-year-old son's book report yesterday.

It was one of his homeworks during the summer vacation and he had not started to do them at all yet.

He already chose the book and finished reading it.

So I asked him what he felt about it and gave him some questions that if he were in the story what would he do?

I typed the things which he told me without any changes on my laptop and printed it.

He transcribed his writing into the manuscript paper.

It was his first time to write such long sentences by his hand, so he complained many times like "I am tired!".

When he finished writing the first page, I noticed that it was strange.

"Why will one line be insufficient than a copy?

I found that he skipped one line in the second paragraph.

I told him,

"I am afraid to say that,  you should write it again. I am going to help erase them."

Needless to say, he got mad and said,

"Give me a break! I don't want to do it again! I dislike doing homework!"

I had to wait until he would calm down.

He can do it in another day.
