39.5 Degrees Celcius (103.1 Degrees Fahrenheit)

It is not the highest temperature yesterday.

It was my 6-year-old son's body temperature yesterday.

He told me yesterday morning,

" I have a sore throat. I also have a headache."

"Really?"

I touched his head but it was not hot.

I took his temperature but he didn't have a fever.

"Maybe you might feel tired because of the air-conditioner and too hot days recently. But you don't have a fever, so go to the children's house today."

I told him.

He said,

"No! I don't want to go! Please take me to the hospital!"

"But I can't take a day off easily because we work on the shift. If you feel sick, tell your teachers. I will pick you up."

I took him to the children's house then I went to work.

When I was going to have a lunch with my co-workers, the company's phone rang.

It was my son's children's house.

The teacher told me,

"Since he couldn't eat his lunch and he told me that he had a headache, I took his temperature, he had a fever of 38.1 degrees Celsius (100.58 Fahrenheit) now. Could you come and pick him up from now?"

I asked our leader to leave early and went to the children's house to pick him up.

After we came home, it was getting worse and worse.

I took his temprature, his fever was 39.5 Degrees Celcius (103.1 Degrees Fahrenheit)!

I made an appointment with pediatrics.

But he didn't want to go there because he had a severe headache and almost threw up.

I called the hospital and told them that we could not go there by the turn of his reservation.

I kept cooling his head with ice, but he couldn't sleep and looked in pain.

After an hour, I took him to the hospital.

He cried and said,

"It is too hot in the car! I have a headache!"

Yesterday's highest temperature was 38 degrees Celsius (100.4 Fahrenheit).

But his temperature was higher than that.

His weight is now 20kg.

He was too heavy for me but I had to carry him.

The doctor said,

"His throat is swollen. It's probably summer cold."

After we came home, I gave him antipyretics.

Then he could go to sleep at last.

While he was sleeping, I went to the nursery school to pick up my 4-year-old daughter.

He slept for 2 hours, then he woke up.

Medicine seemed to work, and his temperature had gone down.

Since he didn't want to eat, I made him drink water and take antibiotics which the doctor prescribed  for him.

He woke up before 6am in the early morning today.

He has still a slight fever, but he is fine now.

I am relieved.

Maybe he will be able to recover his colds today.

A Sultry Night

"A sultry night" is so-called the night which minimum temperature at night is more than 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit) in Japan.

I used the air-conditioner setting a timer for 2 hours and after it was turned off, I opened the windows and used a fan. I've done this routine 'till last year.

But this year, I can't stand the heat and I can't sleep well.

Children also seem not to be able to sleep well, they roll around and often bump into me and my husband when they are sleeping.

We can't sleep well even more.

So now I leave the air-conditioner on setting at 28 degrees Celsius (82.4 Fahrenheit) and use a fan together during the night.

By doing this, we can sleep well more than before.

But last night, I was kicked by my 6-year-old son many times.

I guess it was only because he tossed around in my sleep.

Anyway, using the air-conditioner costs a lot of money, but I can't help it.

The Parent's Duty

I went to the summer festival which was held near my house with my children yesterday evening.

I heard from a friend of mine that it won't be crowded if we go before 5pm, so we reached there by 5pm though it was still hot.

Since my children were looking forward to this festival, they were so excited to hang around rows of stalls .

I gave them allowances specially, and they bought toys, french fries, shaved ice, fried chicken, and soft drinks.

They were excited every time they met their friends and played together for a while.

We spent for about 2 hours there.

They said, "It was fun! I want to go again!"

As for me....

To tell the truth, I don't like crowded places.

I liked to go to the summer festival before, especially it was one of my biggest fun when I was a child.

But now, to go to the summer festival makes me tired.

Because it is hot and humid, and everything is very expensive but of course children want to buy something so I have to spend a lot of money though they are not so yummy.

And I have to talk with my children's friends' parents even if I am not familiar with them.

Since I am not a sociable person very much, to look out for other people all the time often makes me tired.

But I really understand that children love festivals and they were looking forward to going there very much.

If I were 10 years younger, I could enjoy summer festivals with my children!

I try to think that it is the parent's duty.

In The Bathroom

My children and I always take a bath together.

It is very comfortable and relaxing for me to soak in the bathwater and wash my sweat.

My children are standing in the bathtub because it is too hot for them to stay in hot water for a long time.

Since they play toys like water guns, it takes for a long time to take a bath.

My 6-year-old son was putting on one-man show of the story of "Youkai Watch" in the bathtub yesterday.

("Youkai Watch" is very popular anime among Japanese children.)

He's very familiar with the lines used in the conversation of this famous anime.

I was really surprised at his good memory because he easily get familiar with those lines and sound effects and he only watched the episode twice or three times.

As for my 4-year-old daughter, she was washing her head by herself.

She made bubble by shampoo and washed her hair like an ice-cream cone.

Since she likes soup very much and often makes bubbles with it, I told her,

"You are like a raccoon!" ( because a raccoon is called "Araiguma" in Japanese and "Arai" means "washing".)

I guessed she would get mad, but she didn't.

She smiled at me and said,

"Yeah, I am "Araiguma"!"

Our bath time took for a long time yesterday again.

The Reason Why The Swimming Lesson Was Canceled

My 6-year-old son goes to the children's house while I go to work during the summer vacation.

There are some teachers there, and he plays with other children, does their homework, reads books, draws pictures, and sometimes can watch TV for a while.

I pick him up after my work.

During July, they can go to school in the afternoon to join the swimming lessons.

I got an e-mail from my his elementary school yesterday.

It was the notice of pool class cancellation.

Because the weather forecast said that the risk index of heatstroke will become "Dangerous" in our city in the afternoon, so teachers gave priority to children's safety.

I was so surprised to read it.

When I was a child, the swimming lesson had never been canceled due to the high temperature.

We go into the swimming pool because it is hot, don't we?

The highest temperature was 35 degrees celsius here yesterday. (about 95 degrees fahrenheit).

Most customers of our company said,

"Oh, it is too hot today! It is very cool and comfy! here." when they come into our company because the air conditioner always works well.

It must be one of the greenhouse effects.

I am worried about what will happen to the earth in the next generations.

Cicada catching

When we hear cicadas singing, we feel  the height of summer.

Cicadas live as larvae for many years under the ground, and they can live as imago for only for a month.

So I feel that cicadas singing are like crying of their lives.

(But many people feel that cicadas' big chorus is noisy because they sing from early morning to the sunset.)

Cicadas catching is one of the popular activities for boys in Japan.

Many insect cages and insect catching nets are sold in shops.

My 6-year-old son also loves cicada catching very much.

I went to the park near my house with my children yesterday afternoon.

There are a lot of trees there and it was easy to find many cicadas.

I caught cicadas using the insect catching net and he grabbed and put them into the insect cage.

We caught fourteen cicadas!

Since my 4-year-old daughter is scared of cicadas, she was riding a swing while we were catching cicadas.

I told my son after we caught them enough,

"Release them when we go home. Poor cicadas can live only for a short time."

"I know. I will. But I want to take four of them to the home. Can I?"

"Only two. But let's release them after you observe them. OK?"

He agreed reluctantly.

He released them saying, "Good-bye cicadas! I hope we can meet again somewhere!"

I guess that today will become one of the fun memories in summer vacation for him.

And I was impressed that he grew up a little than two years ago.

He couldn't release them because he wanted to keep them when he was 4 years old.

Then cicadas died in his cages.

I will be glad if he understand cherishing life.

The Midsummer Day of the Ox

Yesterday was the midsummer day of the ox.

We have a traditional custom to eat eel to get stamina to survive the summer heat on the day.

Recently, eels are very expensive because of the poor catch of the young eels.

But I want to eat some though it is expensive.

I bought it at the surpermarket.

My children didn't want to eat eel until last year, but thanks to school lunch, they can eat various foods and they told me that they wanted to eat it this year.

This is dinner for children last night.

*Grilled eel and rice
*Steamed clam and broccoli with sake

It was very yummy!

I felt that I got energy from it.

The book written by himself

My 6-year-old son told me when I picked him up at the children's house yesterday's evening.

"Look at this! I wrote a book by myself."

It was a story about a mother and children of the squirrel.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Feeling Lonely Dependent Little Squirrel

One day, there is a mother squirrel.

She has something in her tummy.

Squirrel babies are in her tummy.

Two babies said good bye to their mother and went away.

But only one baby stayed his mommy's tummy.

What's happen?

Are you going to go out from your mommy's tummy?

He cried and said,

"I want to stay with mommy forever!"

After a while, he stopped crying and finally went away .

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After I read, I told him,

"You imitated the book which we borrowed at the library last week, don't you?"

It was a story about a mother and children of a dandelion and fluff.

"Yeah. I am not good at writing about the human, so I changed the story about the squirrel. The baby who couldn't go away from mom is like me, right?"

It was so funny because I told him the same thing when I read the book which we borrow.

Anyway, this seems to become my good memory of my son in the future.

Give me a break!

Since it would be still a little difficult for him to make sentences and express what he thought, I helped writing my 6-year-old son's book report yesterday.

It was one of his homeworks during the summer vacation and he had not started to do them at all yet.

He already chose the book and finished reading it.

So I asked him what he felt about it and gave him some questions that if he were in the story what would he do?

I typed the things which he told me without any changes on my laptop and printed it.

He transcribed his writing into the manuscript paper.

It was his first time to write such long sentences by his hand, so he complained many times like "I am tired!".

When he finished writing the first page, I noticed that it was strange.

"Why will one line be insufficient than a copy?

I found that he skipped one line in the second paragraph.

I told him,

"I am afraid to say that,  you should write it again. I am going to help erase them."

Needless to say, he got mad and said,

"Give me a break! I don't want to do it again! I dislike doing homework!"

I had to wait until he would calm down.

He can do it in another day.

A dilemma on buying it now

My family visited a car dealer last Saturday to take the legal inspection of my husband's car and take a 6-month inspection of my car.

Both of us have to drive our own way going to the office everyday, that's why we need to have each of our car.

My car had some problem with it's windows.

After opening both the driver and the passenger side, there are times that it doesn't close.

So I told a staff about it and asked to find the reason.

While waiting, I found a nice red car among the display.

When I was trying to ride on it, the salesperson came to me and said,

"Why don't you try to drive it?"

He and I have a long relationship for more than 10 years because my father and sister are also his customer.

He knows about  us very well and he is the best salesperson as far as I know.

My husband and I had a drive test with that car.

He discussed to us the estimated calculation of the cost of the said car.

Finally, we decided to purchase the new car after a long considering.

I was hesitant at first whether I buy it or not because I was considering the price, but I think it's the right time for me to replace my old car which I have driven for 9 long years.

Furthermore, my car needed to fix its window buttons and we had to pay for it.

I was surprised that our children were playing without boring while we were talking for about 7 hours!

This is because various ideas are devised so that children do not get tired of the shop.

For example, the drinks are free and we can drink all we want.

Children can get snacks.

There is a little jungle-gym and slide in the store.

My children's favorite is a small car.

They can ride it inside the store.

They can watch anime on TV,  they can read comics, they can play with toys.

Thanks for them, we could have enough time to consider it.

The typhoon had gone

My 6-year-old son woke up at 6:15am yesterday morning.

It was rare because he always gets up at 7am.

I knew why he woke up early.

Because a big typhoon was approaching Japan.

If a storm warning is issued in our city, school would be closed.

I told him, "Fortunately, the storm warning has not been issued."

"Really? Oh no! I don't want to go to school today!"

Since he was taking it for granted that he would not have to go to school, he got mad.

I decided to leave him alone for a while.

After a while, he started drawing pictures ( he loves drawing very much ).

And he went to school as usual.

It is only children to be glad that a typhoon comes because they don't have to go to school if the storm warning is issued.

Especially my children have not experienced the threat of natural yet.

Fortunately, we have no damage by this typhoon.

I would like to express my heartfelt sympathy to the people affected by this typhoon.

The summer gift which I am glad to get

We recieved a summer gift from my brother-in-law 2 days ago.

It was an assortment of peaches!

They are packed carefully because they are easy to be damaged.

I like fruits very much but I rarely buy a peach because it is expensive.

I was very glad to get them.

Since we live near a grape-producing area, we send them to him and other relatives every summer.

If they are glad, we will be also glad.

My 6-year-old son's masterpiece vol.2

My 6-year-old son's elementary school will enter the summer vacation from this Saturday.

He brought his work which he made in the art class from school yesterday.

How colorful!

I was impressed his work and I thought that’s just like him.

It was made of color paper clay.

The theme was "My favorite food".

He made sushi ( he likes egg and tuna), ramen, fried shrimp, decorated cake, and whipping cream.

He likes making something and drawing pictures very much.

Actually, he was looking forward to the art class, and he practised making this before the class.

One of the teacher of the children's house where he stays after school every day told me that he always concentrates on drawing pictures though the other children are quarreling near him.

I think it is good for him that he has something he can be crazy about.

I hope he will be enjoying his favorite things from now on.

My grandma's favorite recipe

When I visited my parents house with my children last Sunday, my mother gave me boiled whitebait(little white fishes in the photo below) that which were given by someone to them as a summer gift.

Since they go bad quickly, I made two dishes using them.

The dish on the right side is seasoned cucumber mixed with whitebait and dressed with vinegar and soy sauce.

The other one on the left side is seasoned grated radish and with boiled whitebait dressed with vinegar, sugar and soy sauce.

Seasoned grated radish is my grandma's favorite recipe.

Since I like her very much, I used to visit her house and take her to go shopping, lunch, and so on.

When I visited her house, she used to eat it.

It is suitable for summer because vinegar is used and it tastes plain and light.

I also like it very much.

She passed away when she was ninety-six years old.

I somehow felt nostalgic when I eat this kind of dish.

A tiny dinosaur

My 6-year-old son loves animals and insects.

"I did it! Mom! I caught a lizard! How cute!"

....It  looked like a tiny dinosaur and it will never be cute for me.

After that, it run away from his hand and he could never find it any more.

He became in very bad mood, so I told him "I am sorry for you, but you will be able to find it again someday!"

I was really relieved that it run away from him.
Because he would tell me that he would want to raise it at home.

No way!

Summer is a season that likes to tease me because my son's favorite insects come out.
