Homemade Birthday cake

February 11 is National Foundation Day, one of the national holidays in Japan.

And it's also my father's birthday.

Since my children's school is closed on that day, we can go to my parents' house and celebrate with him every year.

My 7-year-old daughter said,

"I want to make cookies for grandpa!"

I suggested to her,

"Why don't we make a birthday cake for him? I used to make it when I was younger. Do you want to try it?"

"Yeah! I want to try!"

She was so excited to hear that because she loves cooking very much.

We went to the supermarket near my parents' house and bought some ingredients like flour, fresh cream, butter, strawberries, and so on.

My children and I started making his birthday cake at my parents' house.

My daughter said to her grandpa,

"Don't come to the kitchen, it's a secret. Look forward to it!"

Actually, he really wanted to see what we were doing, but he had to wait for us.

My 9-year-old son also tried to beat eggs.

It was rare for to help with the cooking, but it seemed to be fun for him.

The cake was baked well.

My children came to the oven and said:

"What a good smell!"

I sliced the sponge cake into two pieces, cut some strawberries, and put them with whipped cream between them.

My daughter enjoyed applying whipped cream on the cake.

She and I decorated the side of the cake with whipped cream, too.

I didn't agree with the idea at first, but my daughter insisted on sprinkling colored chocolate sprinkles on the cake.

"Grandpa! Happy birthday to you!"

My daughter said to him and I brought the birthday cake which we made to him.

He was so glad to see that and said,

"Wow! What a wonderful cake! Thank you so much, I am really happy."

I lit the candles, turned off the room light, and we sang a happy birthday song for him.

The taste was good, but I thought we could have improve upon it.

Of course, a birthday cake which is made by a pastry chef is better than our homemade cake.

But I thought it was really good to make a birthday cake because my father seemed to be really happy.

My ideal mother

I wrote that my 7-year-old son has had a flu since last Saturday's night.

My mother came to our house to take care of my son again yesterday.

I asked her to bring the game named Donjyara 2 days ago.

Donjyara is a picture matching game like mah‐jong and it has been loved by Japanese families for a long time.

I wrote about it in my previous post : http://a-o-j-m.blogspot.jp/2015/02/donjara-good-old-game.html

It was mine and it is still at my parent's home.

Since my 7-year-old son likes playing it very much,  I thought my son and my mother might be able to kill time playing it.

When I left for work at 8:50am, they started playing it.

When I came home at 5pm, they were still playing it!

"Are you still playing with Donjyara?"

"Yes. We have been playing it except when we had lunch and watched TV for a while."

My mother answered.

"You are really patient! If I were you, I could not keep playing it for such a long time!"

I really admired my mother.

"If I were not patient, I could not take care of them!"

She said.

They actually had been playing with it for more than 7 hours!

"You two, no one in the world can play it with you for such a long time! Maybe your grandma is an only one person who can put up with it!"

I told my children but they didn't hear me because they were absorbed in playing it.

Since I am short-tempered, I really admire my mother.

She was always kind to me when I was a child, and she often played with me and my sister.

Whenever I recall my mother, she was always smiling at me.

She is my ideal mother.

A crumpled masterpiece of Godzilla

When I was folding the laundry at the living room in the morning yesterday, I saw my 6-year-old son knocked my 5-year-old daughter down.

My husband who was watching this hit my son's head.

My son started crying.

I asked him,

"What happened?"

He shouted with crying,

"She stamped on the back of my important drawing because there was not white paper! "

I looked at his Godzilla drawing crumpled.

According to him, he was too mad at her and crumpled it into a ball.

I asked my daughter,

"Really? Did you do it?"

She kept silence at first, but she finally said,

"Yeah."

"Why did you do it? You did the same thing before and your brother got mad at you at that time. "

"Because there were no white paper in my drawing pad."

"You should tell me if you don't have any white papers. I have new drawing pads for you. You must be sad if he would draw the picture on your important drawing, right? Say sorry to your brother. "

"I am sorry..."

She said to her brother, but he said,

"No! I don't forgive you!"

"You were surely sad about it, but you don't have to push your sister away, right? That was too much."

My daughter suddenly picked her drawing of gold fishes from a trash can.

I was so surprised to see that and asked to them,

"Why was your drawing in the trash can? Did you throw your sister's drawing by any chance?"

My son nodded at me.

"Why did you do the unpleasant thing which you also don't like to your sister? You are both to blame!"

They started crying together.

I told them,

"Both of you are sad, aren't you? You should not do the unpleasant things to your sibling. Think carefully how others will think if you do it."

I took them to go shopping.

They changed their sad minds and went to the snack area with their arms around each other's shoulders.

I asked to my son,

"Please look after your sister. Stay with her!"

"All right!"

It is always hard to settle down their fight.

Apology

After we came back home yesterday evening, my 6-year-old son told me,

"Mom will get angry with me, but my teacher will call you about me today."

"Why? What happened?"

According to him, on his way home from school, he approached to a girl who was 2 years older than him and who lives near my house with messing around two days ago, and unfortunately his hand happened to hit her leather school bag (randsel) and had scratched on it.

She was really sad and told her mother that she didn't want to go to school.

They told about the happening with their teachers yesterday, and my son appologized to her.

It was a problem that my son didn't tell me about it 2 days ago.

His teacher called me after that, and I heard about it in detail.

Then my son and I went to her house and apologized to them again.

I was shocked that my son only thought that he played with her but she thought my son bullied her.

I realized that this is one of the essential qualities of bullying.

I didn't think that my son become an assailant of the bullying though I have worried that he does not become a victim of the bullying.

I told him patiently about it not to happen again.

I strongly hope that my children will not become both of a victim and a assailant in the future and they will be able to have good relationship with their friends.
