Over 40 degrees

When my 7-year-old son got up yesterday morning, he said:

"I have a headache."

I took his temperature, it was 38.3 degrees Celsius (100.94 degrees Fahrenheit ).

I told him:

"Oh, you have a fever. Are you OK?"

"Oh no!"

My 5-year-old daughter and my husband ran away and they wore masks.

"Did you see them? You found out who worries most about you, don't you?

"Yeah. Only you!"

I took a day off and took him to see a doctor.

The children's clinic uses the internet reservation system and it opens at 8am, so I made a reservation for seeing the doctor in the morning.

But the reservation system was closed after 15 minutes though it is usually opened until 11am.

I thought maybe it was because the flu is going around and too many people tried to make a reservation for seeing the doctor in the morning.

Children who are suspected of having the flu or other infectious diseases have to wait in an isolated waiting space, but all of them including my son were waiting for their turns in the isolated space, so there were no children in the normal waiting room.

I was relieved that his flu test came back negative.

The doctor prescribed some antibiotics and cold medicines.

But his temperature went up 40.2 degrees Celsius (104.36 degrees Fahrenheit) in the afternoon.

I guessed the timing of flu test was too early, so the result was negative, but maybe he had the flu.

His fever wasn't likely to go down.

So I made my children wear masks and I prevented my 5-year-old daughter from approaching my son.

He had medicines and went to bed at 8pm.

My son went to the wash room at 11pm.

He was not hot when I touched him.

I took his temperature, it was 37.3 degrees Celsius ( 99.14 degrees Fahrenheit ).

"Good for you! Your fever went down. How do you feel now?"

"I don't have a headache."

He went to sleep again.

His fever had gone down this morning.

Actually, I have had persistent diarrhea since last Wednesday, and I had a headache this morning.

But I have recovered from both of them.

Mothers can't relax when children are waking up.

  1. Hello Kumi-san,

I am glad to hear that you and your son are fully recovered from your illnesses.

Here is a list of some of the issues found with the post:

    This line:
    "I had a headache."

    Should be:
    "I have a headache."

Reason: It is a direct quote and it is likely that if he was telling you can he currently has a headache that you would use have.

    This line:
I took his temperature, it was 38.3degrees Celsius (100.94 degrees Fahrenheit ).

    Should be:
I took his temperature, it was 38.3 degrees Celsius (100.94 degrees Fahrenheit).

    This line:
"Did you see them? You found who worry about you the most, don't you?

    Should be:
"Did you see them? You found out who worries most about you, don't you?

    This line:
I took a day off and I took him to see a doctor.

    Should be:
I took a day off and took him to see a doctor.

Reason: Repetition. You already stated that you took the day off. So it can be implied that you took him to see the doctor, so you don't have to specifically say I took, just use took.

    This line:
The children's clinic adopts the internet reservation system, so I made a reservation.

    Should be:
The children's clinic uses the internet reservation system, so I made a reservation.

    This line:
Since the flu is going around, the reservation system was closed only for 15 minutes.

Question: Not entirely sure how to interpret the line above? Do you mean:
Since the flu is going around, the reservation system was closed for 15 minutes (because it was overloaded with people wanting to use it?).

    This line:
Children who are suspected the flu or other infectious diseases have to wait in isolated waiting space, but all of them including my son were waiting for their turns in the isolated space, so there were no children in the normal waiting room.

    This line:
The doctor prescribed an antibiotic and cold medicines.

    Should be:
The doctor prescribed some antibiotics and cold medicines.

Reason: I changed an antibiotic to some antibiotics because an English person is more likely to say some antibiotics. Mainly because the antibiotic will not usually just be one pill but several pills/tablets in the bottle/jar.

    This line:
I guessed the timing of flu test was too early, so the result was negative, but maybe he had the flu.

    Should be:
I guessed the flu test was (wrong/incorrect/giving a false negative), so the result was negative, but maybe he had the flu.

    This line:
His fever completely went down this morning.

    Should be:
His fever had gone down completely this morning.

    This line:
Mothers can't have a relax time during children wake up.

    Should be:
Mothers can't relax when children are waking up.

    1. Hello Terry.
      I really appriciate your help.
This post was really difficult to write.

Question: Not entirely sure how to interpret the line above? Do you mean:
Since the flu is going around, the reservation system was closed for 15 minutes (because it was overloaded with people wanting to use it?).

      I corrected the sentence.
      Does it make you clear?

The children's clinic uses the internet reservation system and it opens at 8am, so I made a reservation for seeing the doctor in the morning.

But the reservation system was closed after 15 minutes though it is usually opened until 11am.

I thought maybe it was because the flu is going around and too many people tried to make a reservation for seeing the doctor in the morning.

      About this correction:

      This line:
I guessed the timing of flu test was too early, so the result was negative, but maybe he had the flu.

      Should be:
I guessed the flu test was (wrong/incorrect/giving a false negative), so the result was negative, but maybe he had the flu.

I wanted to say that the result of the flu test becomes often negative when the test was done within 12 hours after the patient had a fever.
He had a fever from 7am and I took him to the clinic around 10am, so maybe the result was negative even if he had a flu.

In this case, would you teach me the most suitable sentence to explain the situation?

  2. Hello Kumi-san,

I altered your corrected sentences slightly, but yes your corrected version is much clearer:
The children's clinic uses the internet reservation system and it opens at 8am, so I made a reservation to see the doctor in the morning.

But the reservation system was closed after 15 minutes though it is usually open until 11am.

I thought maybe it was because the flu is going around and too many people tried to make a reservation to see the doctor in the morning.

    ---

To write that the flu test can be false negative if the person has a fever and the test is done within 12 hours I would write:

I guess the time between my son having a fever and taking the flu test was too short and resulted in the test being negative. If the time between having a fever and taking the flu test is less than 12 hours the result of the test can be a false negative.

He had a fever from 7am and I took him to the clinic around 10am, so maybe the result was negative even though he had the flu.

Reason: I did not know that the test could be influenced by the time between the fever and getting the test. I am assuming that a lot of other people will not know this and so have made it specific. If you want to assume that most parents would know about the 12 hour time limit then the second sentence can be removed.

Hope this helps. If anything is unclear or not what you needed then please let me know.
