The effect of TV

I went to the supermarket with my children yesterday afternoon.

I wanted to buy some chocolate which contains high amounts of cocoa, but most of them had been sold out except one.

I bought the chocolate because of the good effects of chocolate with high amounts of cocoa were introduced on the NHK morning program "Asaichi" 2 days ago.

I also watched the program.

It said that chocolate has a lot of good effects like relieving constipation, preventing dementia, and preventing high blood pressure.

It often happens here in Japan that products are sold out after they are featured on TV.

I bought the last one.

The chocolate includes 95% cacao.

I know it is very bitter and it isn't sweet and delicious.

I ate one with coffee this morning, but actually I didn't like it.

Maybe I will not buy it next time even if it is good for health.

  1. Hello Kumi-san,

Anytime you get an excuse to eat chocolate it is usually a good day. If it is also healthy that is an even better reason. I cant say if chocolate can really be considered healthy but it is nice to eat. If the chocolate is too bitter you can always melt it in coffee and make a hot chocolate.

We have a dark chocolate bar called Bournville, which is high in cocoa but not 95%, but is not as bitter. Very nice in coffee, or to make into a chocolate milkshake.

Since Japan has very healthy people partly because of the Japanese food, I am always slightly suspicious of advertisers trying to get you to eat less healthy things like McDondalds and the like. I often see Japanese people starting to eat more western diets and it leaves me wanting to tell them to stop and stick with their own native foods, as it is much healthier and higher quality. The rest of the world has massive weight, diabetes and heart disease problems, while in Japan all of those illnesses are much less frequent.

The best phrase I like is from Michael Pollan "Eat Food, Mostly Plants, Not Too Much". Which is mostly what Japanese food is.

Here are some of the issues found with the post:

    This line:
I went to the supermarket for shopping with my children yesterday afternoon.

    Should be:
I went to the supermarket with my children yesterday afternoon.

    Or:
I went to the supermarket to do the shopping with my children yesterday afternoon.

Reason: Because you mention that you are going to the supermarket you can usually leave out the for shopping, because the fact that you are at the supermarket can be used to imply that you are there to do shopping. If you want to leave in the shopping you can use the second sentence.

    This line:

    This line:
    I also watched the program.

Reason: I would remove it as it is redundant, you already said previously that you watched the NHK program in the previous sentence. If this is not what you intended then pleae ignore this.

    1. Hello. I really appriciate you Terry.
Thank you for the link of Bournville.
Its advertising slogan "rich cocoa" sounds delicious!(But maybe it would be also bitter..)

Yes, I agree Japanese food is healty because we use a lot of vegetables.
But one of the weak points of Japanese food is that it includes too much salt.
We need to make effort to reduce using salt.

    2. We here have the same issues with too much salt in food. Luckily I try not to put salt directly on my food, but like most things it is almost certain to have hidden salt in it somewhere.

I would imagine that it is hard to remove a lot of the salt from Japanese food as the savory/umami[旨味][うまみ] flavor is very common and popular. Or is this in accurate, do you have not sodium based sources for umami.

I mostly eat rice with, onions, tomatoes, grated carrots and cucumber and a bit of sliced ham, with the rice soaked in vinegar, and for desert an orange.

It is easy for me as I don't have to contend with keeping the entire family happy, I don't mind eating the same thing repeatedly. It would be much harder for me if I had to keep children fed, as they would I assume not like to eat the same healthy things day after day, where as I do not mind. Plus I know that it keeps my weight under control and is not greasy food and so will hopefully mean it prevents heart disease and diabetes. But all I can do is push the odds in my favour with regard to my health. Predicting the future as far as health goes is always an element of luck. It also helps that I really like rice with vinegar and vegatables :)
