How do you spend time with your children during the summer vacation?

I took my 7-year-old son to Karate practice last night.

Since it ends 8pm, I went there to pick him up with my 6-year-old daughter.

After the practice, my son started playing tag with other boys as usual.

While waiting, I asked the mother whose son was also playing tag with my son:

"How do you spend time with your son during the summer vacation?"

She answered:

"Since my parents' home isn't very far and they have cousins there, we often go there and he plays with them."

"That's good for you! Since I go to work, my son goes to the children's house and spends his time there from 9am to 5pm."

I told her.

She looked surprised at this and asked me:

"So you have to make a lunch box every day, don't you? And how about your daughter? Does she go to the nursery school?"

"Yes. My son is like going to school every day. He does his homework there. He sometimes plays with friends, reads comics, draws pictures, and so on. Children who stay at the children's house sometimes go to school together and swim in the swimming pool."

I told her.

I am curious how other children spend their summer vacation.

Since I work even during the summer vacation, my son needs to stay at the children's house until I pick him up.

If I didn't work, I wonder how I would spend the long vacation.

The summer vacation is one and a half months, it is very long.

My son doesn't like going to the children's house very much, but I think it is good for him because he can play with friends, keep regular hours, and do his homework at the children's house.
Since many teachers take care of them, I can work with no worries.

Since I usually have a day off on Wednesdays and my husband has days off on Weekends, he can stay at home three days a week.

As for my 6-year-old daughter, she likes going to the nursery school.

She can swim in the swimming pool every day, and take a nap after lunch.

She can also play with friends until I pick her up.

She often says to me when I pick her up:

"Oh no! It's too early! I want to play with friends more!"

I always have to wait for her for more than 10 minutes.

  1. Hello Kumi-san,

    It's not often that I have considered how parents plan to spend time with their children. I just assume that events just happen. Also since you lead a busy life at work and at home I am surprised you take time to plan to spend time with your children. Most parents probably never even ask the question.

    Here is a list of some of the other issues found in the rest of the post:

    This line:
    How do you spend with your chlidren during the summer vacation?

    Should be:
    How do you spend time with your children during the summer vacation?

    Reason: "Spend(ing) time/Spend(ing) your time" is a common expression is English. Also corrected spelling mistake for "children"

    See example sentences:

    I always enjoy spending time with my son when he is reading
    I like to spend as much time as possible with my family
    Spending your time efficiently is very important.

    1. Hello Terry.
      I am sorry that I can't take time to correct my blog recently.
      I rarely can have my time during Summer vacation.
      I hope it will end asap!

      I have a question about the correction below.

      This line:
      "Yes. My son is like going to school every day.

      Should be:
      "Yes. My son goes to school every day.

      I wanted to say that my son is like going to school every day even though he doesn't go to school every day, he goes to "children's house" every day. Since there are a lot of children there, it is like a school.
      Do you think what is the best way to explain the situation?

      Thank you so much!

    2. Hello Kumi-san,

      With regard to:

      "I wanted to say that my son is like going to school every day even though he doesn't go to school every day, he goes to "children's house" every day. Since there are a lot of children there, it is like a school."

      I am assuming that the word "like" is being used to indicate that your son is fond/enjoys going to school/childrens house everyday. If that is so then "like" should be changed to "likes/likes to/is liking going to"

      So your original sentence would be:

      "Yes. My son (likes going to/likes to go to/is liking going to) school every day. He does his homework there. He sometimes plays with friends, reads comics, draws pictures, and so on. Children who stays at the children's house sometimes go to school together and swim in the swimming pool."

      Reason: My confusion was caused by the fact that "like" can have different meanings depending on how it is used.

      1. "Like" can mean (fond/enjoys) or similar meaning words.

      2. "Like" can also be used as a slang word to indicate that someone or something is or does a particular thing.

      For example:

      My son likes reading very much. (Type 1)
      My son is fond of reading very much.

      My son is like totally a bookworm. (Type 2 - Valley Girl)
      My daughter is like such a Daddy's Girl. (Type 2 - Valley Girl)
      The Japanese language is like super difficult. (Type 2 - Valley Girl)

      In your original sentence the way you used "like" it sounded very much like the slang way of using it (Type 2).

      Type 2 "Like" is often called valley girl speak.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81IZDhXeJBk

      As you can hear in the video the word "like" is used as a connecting/filler word in the case of valley girl speak.

    3. Thank you Terry.
      I watched the video, it was a little difficult to catch what the woman who wore the black cloth said.
      She spoke too fast for me and her slang was difficult to understand.

      In fact, I used "like"in my sentence in the meaning of type 2.
      Actually he doesn't go to school because the school is closed during the summer vacation, but the children's house is similar to school because there are a lot of children there.
      In Japanese:
      "私の息子は毎日学校に行っているようなものです。”
      (My son is like going to school every day.)

      It is really difficult to transfer what I want to say to English.

      I always appriciate your great help.

    4. Hello Kumi-san,

      I hope that I understand your original meaning now, your Japanese sentence I think gave me enough information to understand (but I am not certain).

      I made an attempt to translate your Japanese sentence into a literal English sentence. Bear in mind that my Japanese is awful so I could be misinterpreting what I read:

      私の = my
      息子 = son
      は = regarding/in regard to/as for
      毎日 = every day
      学校 = school
      に = to
      行っている = going
      ような = similar/having a similar quality
      もの = thing
      です = is (polite ending)

      If I read the English words then I think that sentence would be written as:
      Everyday my son goes to school or a similar school-like environment.

      In English as far as I know we do not have a set expression for that Japanese sentence as you seem to do in Japanese. But the sentence above would be understood even though it is somewhat verbose.

      If I got the interpretation wrong then please let me know. Or if you have suggestions then please also let me know :)

      When you want to say that something has a property that is similar to another thing but it not that thing you do indeed use like. Here are some example sentences that do that:

      It had a chocolate-like flavor even though it was not chocolate.
      The material had a velvet-like quality.
      They were a war-like people.
      The old car had a tank-like quality, it was solidly built!

      The - is very likely used to separate the words when being used to compare something to something else.

      Sorry for the confusion, it should have been obvious to me how "like" was being used. I need to pay more attention to my English :/
