The school summer vacation began!

The summer vacation began yesterday.

My 7-year-old son was glad because he didn't have to go to school.

But he has to stay at the children's house when I go to work.

Since the school lunch is not provided, I have to make a lunch box for him.

It is really annoying.

Actually, I have made my lunch box for three and a half years ( since I started working my current job.)

But making two lunch boxes is not easy for me.

My son sometimes complains about the side dish of the lunch box.

I usually put leftovers in it, but he is getting sick of my bento (lunch box).

At the end of the summer vacation last year, he said:

"I am sick of mom's bento! I want to eat the school lunch!"

I also said to him:

"Me too! I am really tired of making the lunch box for you. I do hope the school lunch will start as soon as possible!"

When I was a child, I was really happy during the summer vacation.

There were a lot of fun activities like fireworks, summer festivals, swimming pool, catching cicadas, radio callisthenics, visiting my grandparents’ house, camping, and so on.

But now as a mother, most of them make me tired, but I have to do them.

Because I know my children will surely enjoy them very much!

  1. Hello Kumi-san,

It sounds as if your children's school summer vacation will mean you will unfortunately be even more busy and have even more things to do. I rather foolishly assumed that all school meals in Japan were bento, it did not occur to me that the schools would also provide meals for the children. I really do enjoy watching bento lunch creation videos on Youtube. Though I doubt busy parents have such amounts for free time to make all the artistic and amazing looking bento that I have seen on Youtube. The only down side for me is that they inevitably make me hungry :)

Here is a list of some of the issues found in the rest of the post:

    This line:
    The summer vacation began!

    Should be:
    The school summer vacation began!

Reason: Although I am being a little strict here it may help to be more specific about the type of vacation you are writing about. The vacation that you are writing about is a school vacation where children are not going to school for a while. These are generally called School Vacations or School Summer Vacations in English. Whereas vacations that the entire family takes to do things such as go on holiday or on a long trip are generally known as Family Vacations in English.

    This line:
The summer vacation began from yesterday.

    Should be:
    The summer vacation began yesterday.

Reason: Removed "from" as it was not needed. Determining when "from" can be used is I think a little difficult so one thing you can do in some cases is to replace "from" with "as of" when its being used with reference to days and times. See Examples:

    Examples:
Our vacation (started/began) from yesterday. (Wrong - "from" is not needed and make sentences grammatically incorrect).
Our vacation (started/began) as of yesterday. (Correct - this sounds a little verbose but is grammatically correct).
The summer vacation started yesterday. (Correct)
The summer vacation started as of yesterday. (Correct)
I read from yesterdays newspaper that there would be bad weather today. (Correct - From is ok here because it's being used to indicate a physical object/place. The word "in" could also have been used rather than from.)
From yesterday no one has been able to contact me. (Correct sort of, but still sounds a little odd.)
As of yesterday no one has been able to contact me. (Correct)

    This line:
Actually, I have made my lunch box for me for three and a half years ( since I started working my current job.)

    Should be:
Actually, I have made my lunch box for three and a half years (since I started working my current job.)

Reason: The words "for me" were changed to "for" as you do not need to say the bento was for you as you previously indicated this at the start of the sentence when you said "I have made my lunch ....".

    This line:
But making two lunch box is not easy for me.

    Should be:
But making two lunch boxes is not easy for me.

Reason: Because there is more than one lunch box that needs to be made "lunch boxes" the plural must be used.

    This line:
At the end of the summer vacation in last year, he said:

    Should be:
At the end of the summer vacation last year, he said:

Reason: Removed "in" as it was not needed.

    This line:
There were a lot of fun activities like fireworks, summer festivals, swimming pool, catching cicadas, radio calisthenics, visiting my grandparents’ house, camping, and so on.

Reason: Correct spelling for "calisthenics" is "callisthenics" in English.

    1. Hi Terry.
      Thank you for detailed explanations!
I didn't know the expression "as of".
Your example sentences are really useful and helpful.
      Thank you so much!
