A Sultry Night

"A sultry night" is so-called the night which minimum temperature at night is more than 25 degrees Celsius (77 Fahrenheit) in Japan.

I used the air-conditioner setting a timer for 2 hours and after it was turned off, I opened the windows and used a fan. I've done this routine 'till last year.

But this year, I can't stand the heat and I can't sleep well.

Children also seem not to be able to sleep well, they roll around and often bump into me and my husband when they are sleeping.

We can't sleep well even more.

So now I leave the air-conditioner on setting at 28 degrees Celsius (82.4 Fahrenheit) and use a fan together during the night.

By doing this, we can sleep well more than before.

But last night, I was kicked by my 6-year-old son many times.

I guess it was only because he tossed around in my sleep.

Anyway, using the air-conditioner costs a lot of money, but I can't help it.

The Parent's Duty

I went to the summer festival which was held near my house with my children yesterday evening.

I heard from a friend of mine that it won't be crowded if we go before 5pm, so we reached there by 5pm though it was still hot.

Since my children were looking forward to this festival, they were so excited to hang around rows of stalls .

I gave them allowances specially, and they bought toys, french fries, shaved ice, fried chicken, and soft drinks.

They were excited every time they met their friends and played together for a while.

We spent for about 2 hours there.

They said, "It was fun! I want to go again!"

As for me....

To tell the truth, I don't like crowded places.

I liked to go to the summer festival before, especially it was one of my biggest fun when I was a child.

But now, to go to the summer festival makes me tired.

Because it is hot and humid, and everything is very expensive but of course children want to buy something so I have to spend a lot of money though they are not so yummy.

And I have to talk with my children's friends' parents even if I am not familiar with them.

Since I am not a sociable person very much, to look out for other people all the time often makes me tired.

But I really understand that children love festivals and they were looking forward to going there very much.

If I were 10 years younger, I could enjoy summer festivals with my children!

I try to think that it is the parent's duty.

In The Bathroom

My children and I always take a bath together.

It is very comfortable and relaxing for me to soak in the bathwater and wash my sweat.

My children are standing in the bathtub because it is too hot for them to stay in hot water for a long time.

Since they play toys like water guns, it takes for a long time to take a bath.

My 6-year-old son was putting on one-man show of the story of "Youkai Watch" in the bathtub yesterday.

("Youkai Watch" is very popular anime among Japanese children.)

He's very familiar with the lines used in the conversation of this famous anime.

I was really surprised at his good memory because he easily get familiar with those lines and sound effects and he only watched the episode twice or three times.

As for my 4-year-old daughter, she was washing her head by herself.

She made bubble by shampoo and washed her hair like an ice-cream cone.

Since she likes soup very much and often makes bubbles with it, I told her,

"You are like a raccoon!" ( because a raccoon is called "Araiguma" in Japanese and "Arai" means "washing".)

I guessed she would get mad, but she didn't.

She smiled at me and said,

"Yeah, I am "Araiguma"!"

Our bath time took for a long time yesterday again.

The Reason Why The Swimming Lesson Was Canceled

My 6-year-old son goes to the children's house while I go to work during the summer vacation.

There are some teachers there, and he plays with other children, does their homework, reads books, draws pictures, and sometimes can watch TV for a while.

I pick him up after my work.

During July, they can go to school in the afternoon to join the swimming lessons.

I got an e-mail from my his elementary school yesterday.

It was the notice of pool class cancellation.

Because the weather forecast said that the risk index of heatstroke will become "Dangerous" in our city in the afternoon, so teachers gave priority to children's safety.

I was so surprised to read it.

When I was a child, the swimming lesson had never been canceled due to the high temperature.

We go into the swimming pool because it is hot, don't we?

The highest temperature was 35 degrees celsius here yesterday. (about 95 degrees fahrenheit).

Most customers of our company said,

"Oh, it is too hot today! It is very cool and comfy! here." when they come into our company because the air conditioner always works well.

It must be one of the greenhouse effects.

I am worried about what will happen to the earth in the next generations.

Cicada catching

When we hear cicadas singing, we feel  the height of summer.

Cicadas live as larvae for many years under the ground, and they can live as imago for only for a month.

So I feel that cicadas singing are like crying of their lives.

(But many people feel that cicadas' big chorus is noisy because they sing from early morning to the sunset.)

Cicadas catching is one of the popular activities for boys in Japan.

Many insect cages and insect catching nets are sold in shops.

My 6-year-old son also loves cicada catching very much.

I went to the park near my house with my children yesterday afternoon.

There are a lot of trees there and it was easy to find many cicadas.

I caught cicadas using the insect catching net and he grabbed and put them into the insect cage.

We caught fourteen cicadas!

Since my 4-year-old daughter is scared of cicadas, she was riding a swing while we were catching cicadas.

I told my son after we caught them enough,

"Release them when we go home. Poor cicadas can live only for a short time."

"I know. I will. But I want to take four of them to the home. Can I?"

"Only two. But let's release them after you observe them. OK?"

He agreed reluctantly.

He released them saying, "Good-bye cicadas! I hope we can meet again somewhere!"

I guess that today will become one of the fun memories in summer vacation for him.

And I was impressed that he grew up a little than two years ago.

He couldn't release them because he wanted to keep them when he was 4 years old.

Then cicadas died in his cages.

I will be glad if he understand cherishing life.

The Midsummer Day of the Ox

Yesterday was the midsummer day of the ox.

We have a traditional custom to eat eel to get stamina to survive the summer heat on the day.

Recently, eels are very expensive because of the poor catch of the young eels.

But I want to eat some though it is expensive.

I bought it at the surpermarket.

My children didn't want to eat eel until last year, but thanks to school lunch, they can eat various foods and they told me that they wanted to eat it this year.

This is dinner for children last night.

*Grilled eel and rice
*Steamed clam and broccoli with sake

It was very yummy!

I felt that I got energy from it.

The book written by himself

My 6-year-old son told me when I picked him up at the children's house yesterday's evening.

"Look at this! I wrote a book by myself."

It was a story about a mother and children of the squirrel.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Feeling Lonely Dependent Little Squirrel

One day, there is a mother squirrel.

She has something in her tummy.

Squirrel babies are in her tummy.

Two babies said good bye to their mother and went away.

But only one baby stayed his mommy's tummy.

What's happen?

Are you going to go out from your mommy's tummy?

He cried and said,

"I want to stay with mommy forever!"

After a while, he stopped crying and finally went away .

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After I read, I told him,

"You imitated the book which we borrowed at the library last week, don't you?"

It was a story about a mother and children of a dandelion and fluff.

"Yeah. I am not good at writing about the human, so I changed the story about the squirrel. The baby who couldn't go away from mom is like me, right?"

It was so funny because I told him the same thing when I read the book which we borrow.

Anyway, this seems to become my good memory of my son in the future.
