Considerate family

I have some topics that I wanted to write recently.

But unfortunately, it's hard for me to make time.

I can't write about them on time, but I would like to try to write them one by one before I forget them.

I went to work last Sunday.

A troublesome incident suddenly occurred, which we had to resolve before we could leave the office.

As a result, my coworker and I had to work overtime for 2 hours, but we couldn't solve the problem.

When I went to work, I told my husband that I will come home around 5pm, but I came home at 7pm.

I was so exhausted.

When I opened the entrance door of my house, my 6-year-old daughter came to me and said;

"Hi Mom, we are making dinner now!"

"Oh, you are trying it, are you? Wow, thank you!"

My husband and I were making dinner in the kitchen.

Then my 8-year-old son said;

"Look mom! I put all things away in the living room. It's clean, isn't it?"

I was surprised to see the tidy living room.

"Wow, I am glad! You did it by yourself. Thank you son!"

He looked happy.

My daughter told me:

"This is a special dish I cooked only for you.  Try it!"

She made an omelet for me.

She wrote "ありがとう (Thank you)" with ketchup on it.

I was really impressed to see it.

"How delicious! I am really happy. I'm sure you will make a good cook in the future!"

She was glad to hear that.

My husband cooked other dishes.

"Thank you, all of you help me a lot. I forgot how tired I was!"

I was really moved by their kindness.

Hair Crabs

My husband bought hair Crabs from Hokkaido.

Happily, my husband and I have a day off today.

I will be able to spend Christmas Eve with my family.

I am looking forward to having the crabs for Christmas dinner tonight!

With best wishes and Merry Christmas.

Homemade Korokke (croquettes) by my husband and daughter

I wrote that my 7-year-old son and I were diagnosed with epidemic conjunctivitis.

I also have a general malaise even though I don't have a fever and my son had a fever at first, but it had already gone down.

Since my husband is on his summer vacation until tomorrow, he helped me a lot.

He takes our 6-year-old daughter to the nursery school, picks her up from there, goes shopping, and sometimes prepares meals for us instead of me.

I do laundry, prepare breakfast, and clean rooms as usual, but I soon get tired.

When I feel tired, I take a nap.

He takes care of our children while I sleep.

I am really thankful of him.

He harvested potatoes from our garden yesterday afternoon and started making Korokke for dinner.

After he picked up our daughter from the nursery school, he asked her to help him.

Since she likes helping us very much, she was willing to help him.

I know to make Korokke takes a long time, as I expected, they didn't finish it until 6pm though they started at 4pm.

I also helped them, made bread crumbs, put a lot of used plates away, washed them and made room for making Korokke.

My daughter enjoyed the procedures, made balls with mashed potatoes, coated them in flour, dipped them into egg, and dipped them in the bread crumbs to coat all sides.

Then my husband deep fried them in oil.

"Have a taste!"

My husband told me.

I tasted it:

"It tastes great! Oh? It doesn't have any taste. Did you put salt and pepper into it?"

I asked him.

"Oh-oh! I forgot it!"

He said.

"No problem. It is good enough. We can season it by ourselves. Freshly fried Korokke is really fantastic!"

I told my husband and daughter.

The Korokke they made was really nice, so I ate them too many of them.

I was really happy that they prepared dinner instead of me.

I appreciate their kindness.

Sugakiya Ramen

My husband came home earlier than usual with plastic shopping bags last night.

"Look! These are Sugakiya's bowls and ramens!"

My 7-year-old son said.

I asked my husband:

"Where did you buy them? Were they sold as a souvenir?"

"Maybe. I bought them at the supermarket."

Sugakiya is a popular ramen shop in Aichi prefecture, so I thought this is sold as a souvenir for going back to their hometown in Obon.

I was curious why he bought them, so I asked him about it.

"Because they are very rare."

I agreed with him.

I haven't seen such an interesting set of ramen and bowl.

My children love Sugakiya's ramen very much, so they had opened the box of the gift box instantly.

I asked my husband:

"Are they for us, or is the gift for someone else?"

"For us."

He said.

"I'm relieved. Our children have already opened them!"

"I want to eat ramen!"

My 6-year-old said.

She loves ramen.

"OK, but we already finished dinner today, so I will make it another day."

"Wow! I am looking forward to eating it!"

She said.

Nagoya specialty : Fried Chicken wings produced by Furaibou (風来坊)

I went to the hair salon yesterday afternoon.

When I finished having my hair cut, it was already 6:15pm.

While I was walking the underground shopping area of Nagoya station, I found the store of Furaibou.

It is the name of the company whose fried chicken wings are very popular as one of the Nagoya's specialties.

Furaibou's Tebasaki (風来坊の手羽先) is deep-fried spicy chicken with sweet and savory sauce.

I was hungry and really wanted to eat it, so I bought it and went home.

It goes well with beer!

Although it was spicy, my children were able to eat it, especially my 5-year-old daughter liked it.

If you have the oppotunity to come to Nagoya, please try it!

Ramen and Soft ice cream

After finishing dinner, my children were drawing eagerly.

I finished washing dishes, then I told them:

"I went to the library to return books which I borrowed last time, and borrowed other books today."

I also told my 5-year-old daughter:

"You like stories related to food and snacks, don't you? So I borrowed some."

She said:

"Look mom! I drew this."

"Wow! Did you draw this? A ramen and a soft ice cream which are served at the ramen shop where we sometimes go, right? You drew Naruto and corn and Char siu! It looks tasty. Amazing!"

  I continued:

"And you drew a tea cup. Did you draw a tree?"

"Yes. The right one is a cherry tree blooming. The middle one is a cherry tree in summer, and the left one is a cherry tree in winter."

I was impressed with her imagination.

My 7-year-old son who was listening to my speaking to her told me:

"I can draw ramen and soft ice cream!"

He started drawing eagerly.

"Look mom! I am done!"

He showed me his drawing.

"I drew a set meal. I am eating them on the train. You can see the window, right?  You can see the scenery from the window of the train!"

"Wow! What a gorgeous meal! There is a crab! And I don't know why but there is also a Hinomaru-bento!"

Hinomaru-bento is a bento which consists of rice and umeboshi(pickled plum), and it looks like a Japanese national flag.

That's why it is called Hinomaru-bento.

He believes he is good at drawing, so it was funny for me that maybe he didn't want to lose to his sister.

Bamboo shoots

My mother in law sent us bamboo shoots yesterday.

I sent a text message to my husband to inform him of receiving them because they are perishable so I wanted him to come home early and cut and boil them last night.

It is really hard for me to boil them because they were so big that I can't cut them easily.

Since he loves bamboo shoots very much, he always comes home early if I inform him of receiving bamboo shoots.

He frequently comes home late,  so it is a good reason for him to come home early.
But he didn't come home while my children and I were awake.

When I woke up and went to the kitchen, he had finished boiling the bamboo shoots, so I peeled their skins.

I made steamed rice with bamboo shoots.

He will be glad to see it.

Kumquats in suger syrup (Kinkan no Kanroni)

My children harvested many kinkan (kumquasts) at my parents house last Sunday.

My husband made Kinkan no Kanroni with them last night.

I have been thinking that I should make it, but it is hassle because I often fail to make it correctly.

When I woke up this morning, I found it in the kitchen.

I guessed he was able to come back earlier than usual, and he made it instead of me.

Since I was hectic last night and I was in a really pessimistic mood, I was grateful to  him on seeing it.

It is said that it is good for a sore throat.

Thank you my husband!

Kinako milk

I usually have a cup of coffee in the morning, but I sometimes have a cup of "Kinako milk" recently.

Kinako is roasted soybean flour.

I had previously bought Kinako to sprinkle with boiled mochi, but sicne it is about to expire, I wanted to use it.

I microwaved a cup of milk and put some Kinako into it and mixed and melted it.

I also put honey in it.

That's all!

It is very easy to make it.

I read an article on an website before and it said that Kinako milk is good for burning fat, relieving constipation, obtaining calcium, preventing hypertension, improving skin complexion.

It can prevent overeating if you have it before breakfast.

I think I will try to continue drinking it for a while.

The ending of congratulation on their recovery from the flu

Our family went to Sushiro (sushi-go-round restaurant) for lunch yesterday to celebrate that my 5-year-old daughter and my husband recovered from the flu.

After we finished lunch, I told my husband:

"Would you like to have a coffee? If so, why don't we go to Komeda?"

Komeda is one of the famous coffee shops around here.

I thought it was too luxurious to eat out twice a day, but I wanted to visit there because I was really tired from taking care of them and making meals three times a day during they had the flu, so I thought this luxury was acceptable on rare occasions.

I ordered coffee and Siro Noir(シロノワール).

Siro Noir is one of the most popular menus in Komeda, it is a danish bread with soft cream and syrup.

Whenever I go to Komeda, I always order the Siro Noir.

I shared it with my daughter.

My children enjoyed reading children's books and my husband and I enjoyed reading some magazines prepared in the shop while having a nice coffee.

After that, we went shopping at the supermarket, then we stopped by the park near the supermarket.

My children have visited there on a field trip with the nursery school, but I visited there for the first time though it was not so far from our house,

Since there were a lot of benches and trees in the park, it was really comfortable to look at my children.

My daughter and I enjoyed riding the swings, and my 7-year-old son and my husband climbed up the big tree.

Since the trunk of the tree were so thick, it was easy for my son to climb it.

While I was riding the swing, my stomach started aching.

We stayed at the park about 1 hour, but I said:

"Let's go home. I have a stomach ache."

My children said:

"Oh no! I want to stay here more!"

But I ignored them and started walking to my car.

After we came home, Since I was so sleepy and had a stomach ache, I went to bed.

While my husband took our children to practice riding bicycles, I took a nap for a while.

I recovered from my stomach ache after dinner.

I thought maybe I ate too much at a lunch time.

My son finished drawing his ideal town which I wrote about in yesterday's post.

I was not able to give him some advice about his drawing, so I suggested him yesterday morning:

"Why don't you draw the airport? How about add the sea and a supermarket? Are there any hospitals?"

"OK! I will add them!"

He completed his ideal town.

I told him:

"Wow! If there were a town like this, I would like to live there!"

He looked happy to hear that.

Busy Girl's Festival

"Oh my goodness! I forgot to set the timer of the rice cooker! I have to go home in hurry, or our dinner time will be later than usual."

On my way to the children's house where my 7-year-old son stays after school, I was thinking about how to manage the time after we came home.

Since it was the Girl's Festival yesterday, I had a lot of things to do.

First, I made Chirashizushi and clam (Asari) soup for dinner.

These are my standard recipes for dinner on the Girl's Festival.

Next, I wrote about how my children were in this year on the notebooks.

I prepared each of notebooks 4 years ago.

My children draw a picture of the Hina Dolls on the notebooks on Girl's Festival day every year, and I write about the status of my children like their current characters, what they like, what they don't like, who their best friends are, in the notebooks.

In addition, my husband and I write a letter to our children in the notebooks.

My mother used to do this for me and my sister and we enjoyed looking at our old drawings and letters very much every year.

I hope my children will enjoy these notebook after they grow up.

Last, I put the Hina Doll's away.

This was hard task for me.

I needed to treat them carefully, so I wore gloves to prevent making the dolls dirty.

And I covered every part of the dolls with thin papers.

"Shall I help you?"

My 5-year-old daughter said, but I answered:

"Oh, no thank you. I am glad to hear your offer, but this task is a little difficult for you. I have to handle them carefully. Look, this is a hat for the male doll. It is very small. I have to wrap it with this thin paper. I should be careful not to lose such small parts. Please go ahead and take a bath. It's already 8:20pm!"

My son and daughter went to the bathroom.

I finished putting Hina Dolls away at 8:35pm.

It was a very busy day.

There was a reason why I had to put them away by the end of March 3rd.

Because it is said that daughters will let marriage pass them by if their parents leave them displayed after March 3rd!

Having vegetables sale!

I wrote about the unmanned fruits and vegetables sale stand in my past entry : http://a-o-j-m.blogspot.jp/2014/11/japanese-conscience-unmanned-sale-stand.html

Our neighbour family are farmers and they sometimes open the unmanned fruits and vegetables sale stand near the nursery school.

When I went to the nursery school to pick my 5-year-old daughter up yesterday, she started crying because she was playing with her classmate and she wanted to play with him more.

"Prepare to go home, your mom is waiting for you!"

Her teacher told her.

"I wanted to play with him more!"

She followed me unwillingly while crying.

My 6-year-old son who was waiting for us in the dark car got angry with her and shouted from the window:

"Too late!"

She cried bitterly.

I needed to calm them down.

"Let's go to the vegetable store! Look! There are a lots of mikan (mandarin orange)!  Wow!

These mikan are 100 yen per bag full!

 Do you understand the meaning?

You can pack as many of these small mandarin oranges in the plastic bag for 100 yen.
Do you want to try it?"

"It looks fun! I want to try it!"

He stopped getting angry and she stopped crying, and they enjoyed it very much.

The mandarin oranges were very small but sweet and yummy.

My son and I ate six and my daughter ate 3 and she put one into the freezer.

She likes a frozen mandarin orange very much.

"I am going to eat it for breakfast!"

I also bought a cabbage and a big Japanese radish.

In total the mandarin orange and radish were 300 yen.

How reasonable!

I drew the face on the Japanese radish (^.^).

Temptation and destiny

Since my husband went to the farewell party of his staff last evening, my children and I went to Hama-zushi, one of the famous sushi-go-round restaurant yesterday.

Most of sushi cost 100 yen a plate.

We can choose not only sushi but also side dishes and dessert.

I found an attractive dessert coming on the conveyor belt that I have never seen before.

It was a strawberry cheesecake and it costs 200 yen.

The cheese cake was a limited time offer and if it runs out of stock they won't serve it again.

I told my 6-year-old son,

"I think it is better to eat two plates of sushi than the cheesecake which costs 200 yen for only one, right?"

I was like doing a monologue, so he didn't answer me.

The cake passed by in front of our table.

Next time it was coming on the conveyor belt, I told my son,

"I can't decide which is better, a cheesecake or sauteed clam with butter. Both cost 200yen. I think clam is better for my health but I also want to eat cheesecake. I can't decide!"

My son said,

"Which are you going to choose, cheesecake or clam? "

I couldn't decide and the cheesecake passed by us again.

Third time it was coming, I told my 5-year-old daughter,

"Can I eat the cheesecake?"

"Sure!"

She answered.

I said to myself,

"It is not good not to try what I want to do."

My son said,

"The destiny time. Ta-da-da-da!"

He sang "The destiny " from Symphony No. 5 of Beethoven."

Finally I took the plate of cheesecake and ate it.

It was yummy!

I couldn't wait, so I had taken a bite of the cheesecake before I took a photo of it!

Furthermore, I also ate clam sushi!

Apparently I can't put up with not eating yummy food.

Tamago kake gohan

Our dinner 2 days ago was Udon (Japanese noodle) .

I cooked 3 go of rice everyday, and there were a lot of leftovers.

("Go" is a traditional Japanese unit of area and volume, and 1 go is equal to 180mL.)

My children don't like to eat leftover rice because it usually becomes harder and dry.

But I wanted them to eat it because there was too much leftover rice, which I eat alone.

I suggested them,

"Why don't you eat Tamago kake gohan? You will find it very delicious."

"Yeah, I want to eat it!"

They were glad to hear my suggestion.

Here is how I prepared Tamago kake gohan.

First, break a fresh egg into a small bowl and put some soy sauce in it.

Next, mix them using chopsticks.

Pour them on the hot rice.

It's ready to eat!

It's easy to make!

They ate them all.

I used soy sauce which I bought from Kagoshima.

The soy sauces used in Kyusyu where Kagoshima is located are sweeter than the soy sauce in our area.

When I traveled to Kagoshima 20 years ago, I was so surprised at its taste.

I thought it was good for children, that's why I used it.

Dad's curry rice

I worked yesterday.

I prepared for dinner in the early morning.

The menu was curry rice.

I cut vegetables, but I found there were no mushrooms and meat.

My husband said that he goes shopping, so I asked him.

I came back home at 5:30pm.

When I opened the door of our house, an appetizing aroma were filling the house.

"I finished cooking curry rice!"

My husband said.

I was really glad to hear that.

I didn't need to rush to prepare dinner.

"Itadakimasu! (Let's eat!)"

The curry rice which my husband made was yummy.

All of us had second, furthermore third!

I told him,

"It was very yummy! Look! Children are eating a lot! Please make it again when I work on Sunday."

But he didn't play into my hand.

He said,

"No way!"

↓ This is the curry roux which I always use. This taste is mild, so my children like it very much.

We can't stop eating nori!

My children like nori (Japanese dried laver), especially seasoned dried laver.

It is toasted and seasoned with mainly soy sauce, suger, and mirin.

My 6-year-old son told me when we were having dinner yesterday,

"I want to eat nori!"

Our main dish was this, pork, burdock, and mashroom bound together with egg.

He started putting rice on the nori, and futhermore put pork and burdock,

and roll them together.

(Actually he mistook the front and back of laver. We usually put ingredients on the back.)

This is a kind of Norimaki ( rice rolled in dried laver)!

He said,

"It was yummy!"

I also tried it, I liked it very much because I seasoned main dish strongly, so it went well with rice and nori.

All of us ate it and we couldn't stop eating it.

What kind of soy sauce do you like?

My husband cooked Sukiyaki for dinner while I was doing housework yesterday evening.

He is our "Nabe-bugyou" in our house.

"Nabe-bugyou" is one of the slang of Japanese language.

It means a person who wants to make the decision for cooking hotpot dishes in one's way.

It also means a person who is a control freak.

It was yummy!

But he said,

"It was a little salty, isn't it?"

After I finished eating rice, I also felt that it was salty.

"Maybe the reason was that I used the thin soy sauce. I had better use the dark soy sauce."

He said.

There are a lot of kind of soy sauce in Japan.

The dark soy sauce is normal (right one in the upper photo), but the taste is completely different depending on the region, brewing company, and so on.

For example, the soy sauce used in my husband's hometown is very sweet, not salty.

The thin soy sauce is saltier than the dark soy sauce, and its color is lighter than that.

When we eat Sashimi, I usually use the soy sauce called "Sashimi-damari".

Its characteristics are; it is thick, it has rich flavor and has a unique aroma.

We use the soy sauce selectively, depending on the food.

Dinner with three generation

My family visited my parents house last Monday evening.

My sister and brother in law also came and had dinner together.

All of our family visit my parents house twice a year, Bon Festival and New Year holidays and have dinner together.

My children are always shy when they meet their uncle and aunt after a long time interval, but they got used to them soon and behaved as usual.

Since my mother always order catered foods and they are always tasty, I was looking forward to eating them.

This time it was also delicious.

We enjoyed dinner together and had an animated conversation about my children and our good old days.

Especially my father was so glad to see his grandchildren, he seemed very happy.

After we finished dinner, we enjoyed sparklers together.

We stayed there one night.

Maybe it would be one of the best memories of summer vacation for my children.

The Midsummer Day of the Ox

Yesterday was the midsummer day of the ox.

We have a traditional custom to eat eel to get stamina to survive the summer heat on the day.

Recently, eels are very expensive because of the poor catch of the young eels.

But I want to eat some though it is expensive.

I bought it at the surpermarket.

My children didn't want to eat eel until last year, but thanks to school lunch, they can eat various foods and they told me that they wanted to eat it this year.

This is dinner for children last night.

*Grilled eel and rice
*Steamed clam and broccoli with sake

It was very yummy!

I felt that I got energy from it.
