The result of Eiken and my next objective

I finally passed the Eiken Grade Pri-1.

But my score on the speaking part which I took the interview test for on July 10th was 517 (full marks is 750).

This is the breakdown of my scores.

Reading   634 / 750  84.5%
Listening 605 / 750  80.6%
Writing    673 / 750  89.7%
Speaking 517 / 750  68.9%
Total        2429/3000  81.0%

As I can see from the score, my weak point is my speaking skill, which I want to improve the most.

I just barely passed the exam, but I am still not satisfied with my current English skill.

I want to be able to express my thoughts in English fluently.

No matter how much the total score I get, it is meaningless to me if  I can't speak in English fluently.

I would like to focus on listening and speaking English from now on to make my dream come true.

  2. Hello Kumi-san,

Well done one passing the exam. Though like you say it was a close run thing and you only just managed to pass. But a pass is a pass. From there I am sure you can improve if you keep up your efforts.

Speaking and listening to English is I would imagine the hardest aspect of learning English for a native Japanese person such as yourself. As finding people who are native English speakers that have a clear non-regional accent or with a standard accent such as English people from places such as London can be hard.

On a related note I saw an article in Japan Times online newspaper which mentioned that the Eiken exam is in the process of being modified to improve the usefulness to Japanese people wanting to learn English. I am not sure if this will or has had any effect on your current result:

Here is a list of some of the issues found with the rest of the post:

    This line:
But my score of speaking part which I took the interview test on July 10 was 517 (full marks is 750).

    Should be:
But my score (on the/for the) speaking part which I took the interview test for on July 10th was 517 (full marks is 750).

Reason: Changed "of" to "(on the/for the)" and also added filler word "for" to "test". Also changed "July 10" to "July 10th" to make this more correct.

    This line:
As I can see from the score, my weak point is speaking skill, which I want to improve the most.

    Should be:
As I can see from the score, my weak point is my speaking skills, which I want to improve the most.

Reason: Pluralized speaking skill, which sounds more natural.

    This line:
I barely could pass the exam, but I am not satisfied with my English skill.

    Should be:
I could barely pass the exam, but I am not satisfied with my English skill.

Reason: Word order changes to make it sound more natural.

    Or:
I just barely passed the exam, but I am (still not/not) satisfied with my current English (skills/skill level).

Reason: Alternative way of saying the sentence you wrote.

    This line:
No matter how much score I can get, it should be meaningless for me unless I can't speak in Enlglish fluently.

    Should be:
No matter how much (the total/the overall) score I get, it is meaningless to me if I can't speak in English fluently. Also corrected spelling mistake for word "English".

Reason: Reworded sentence to make make clear and natural sounding.
I would like to focus on listening and speaking English from now on to make my dream come true.

    1. Hello Terry!
      I always appriciate your help.
And thank you for letting me know the article about Eiken.
I tried to read it a little, it was really interesting.
But it was a long article so I need more time to read it.
I will try to read it when I have enough time.
      Thank you so much!
