Manners which tourists should observe

I saw a thought-provoking news report on NHK morning news yesterday morning.

It was a news report to explaining that local residents are confused by unexpected effects associated with the starting of operation of Hokuriku Shinkansen(bullet train).

It has been 10 months since the Hokuriku Shinkansen opened for business.
A lot of tourist have visited sightseeing spots in Ishikawa prefecture.

But one of the sightseeing spots called Omicho market is annoyed with unexpected effects due to an increase of tourist.

The local residents were disgruntled that they can't take their time to look for something in the market because too many tourists go there and pose in front of stores to take photos.

Some of the foreign tourists grabbed a big crab for sale and took the photo in front of a store though the tourists didn't buy them.

One of the shopkeepers said in the news:

"We display the notice "NO PHOTOGRAPHY", but the situation has not improved yet."

I thought this is a serious problem.

I think it is good for them to increase tourist numbers, but because of the tourists who don't have good manners, residents are unsure how to react.

Previously my family and I went to the market near our house, I was about to take a photo of the fish department.

Then my 7-year-old son told me:

"Mom! Don't take a photo here. Look! There is a notice on the wall."

I looked at the wall, there was a notice which said "NO PHOTOGRAPHY".

"Oh, I didn't notice it. Thank you!"

I felt embarresed.

Since people have not only cameras but also smartphones nowadays, they often take photos more than before and they want to upload them to their SNS.

I understand their feelings, because I have tried to take photos as a tourist, too.

But I think we should observe manners when we take photos.

It was really thought-provoking news for me.

  1. Hello Kumi-san,

We don't really have a good sea food market here or that many tourists. It tends to happen often the tourists in Japan often do not follow Japanese rules of etiquette. I see many complaints on the Japanese websites I read about the conduct of English and American tourists in Japan.

Here are a list of issues found with the post:

Question: is SNS short for Social Networking Service or SMS Short Messaging Service?

    1. Thank you Terry!
This post was really difficult for me to write because I needed to quate the new report.
It was a new challenge for me.

I would like to ask you about the correction.

Tne news report said that not only one tourist but also some tourists grabbed a big crab for sale and took a photo in front of the store.
In your correction, the subject was changed to "One of the foreign tourist" but "They" is used in the next section.
Is the "they" used because you don't know that the tourist is a man or a woman?

Question: is SNS short for Social Networking Service or SMS Short Messaging Service?

I mean SNS like Facebook, LINE, Instagram, and so on.

  2. Hello Kumi-san,

With the sentence about the crab I was not sure weather to interpret it as a single person or multiple people. As a result I guessed the report was about a single person grabbing a single crab.

If multiple people were involved and grabbed multiple crabs then I would write the sentence as:

Some of the foreign tourists grabbed the big crabs for sale and took photo's in front of the store though they didn't buy (them/the crabs).

You are also correct that they can be used when you are not sure if a person is male or female, though if you want to be more specific you could say people or tourists:

Some of the foreign tourists grabbed the big crabs for sale and took photo's in front of the store though the (tourists/people) didn't buy (them/the crabs).

They can also be used to indicate that more the one person did something.

    Example:

I went to the store (One single person (me) went to the store)
They went to the store (more that one person went to the store)
The people went to the store (more that one person went to the store)
That person went to the store (A specific person that is identified went to the store)
A person went to the store (an unspecified single person went to the store)

There is one small exception with the use of they, it can sometimes be used to refer to one person from a collection of many.

    For example:

The star football player scored the first point of the game, they were very pleased about that.

In the above sentence they is used to refer to a single person (the star football player). Even though they is normally used to refer to multiple people. It's as far as I know not grammatically correct, though I see it used and use it myself sometimes even though I should not do. It would be more correct to say:

The star football player scored the first point of the game, he was very pleased about that.

Sorry for the confusion caused with they. I really should be more strict with my grammar. But it often escapes my attention.

With regard to the SNS question I looked it up, I wasn't aware that SNS was a term used in Japan to mean Social Networking Services like Facebook, LINE and such like. Again sorry for the confusion.

    1. Thank you for the clear explanation!
      I understand it.
Yes we use the word of "SNS" in normal conversation and we read it "えすえぬえす".
