Son and Dad, Daughter and Mom

My 7-year-old Son asked me yesterday morning:

"I want to ride my bicycle. Let's go with me!"

He can ride a bicycle, but we have not allowed him yet to ride a bicycle alone because he has not understood the traffic rules and it is still dangerous for him.

"I have to clean these dishes, clean the living room and stairs, and I also want to clean the fish tank of the gold fish. It is dirty, isn't it? So why don't you ask Dad?"

He asked my Husband to go out.

He said:

"Oh my goodness! It is windy today."

"It doesn't matter! Come on!"

"You need to exercise with him. You usually don't have time to exercise."

I told him.

"You, too!"

He said while laughing.

"Of course I have to! But the boy needs father. I think fathers can play with children more actively than mothers. And I have a lot of housework to do."

He accepted our Son's request unwillingly.

"OK, wait a minute."

He changed his cloths and they went out.

My 5-year-old daughter was still having breakfast.

She always takes a long time to finish meals.

I told her:

"Can you do me a favor? I am going to wash the fish tank today. Could you help me?"

"Sure! I like helping you!"

She was glad to hear that.

"OK. Finish your breakfast!"

I started washing dishes, then cleaned stairs, the Japanese room, the washroom, and the living room.

While cleaning, she finished breakfast and came to me.

"What can I do?"

"Well, could you wash the lid of the fish tank and the fish house at the wash basin? Use this brush. Don't use any soap."

"I know! The soap is a poison for gold fish. You taught me before!"

She started washing them.

After I finished cleaning rooms, we started cleaning the fish tank together.

She likes helping me, and she has washed the fish tank several times.

I was surprised that she could wash it very well.

She started changing water.

I told her:

"Pour water softly so that fish will not be surprised."

"Softly, gently."

She whispered.

"OK, we finished. Wow! The fish tank became clean! Thank you my Daughter!"

"You're welcome! I like helping you very much!"

My Son and Husband have just come home.

I asked him:

"Where did you go?"

He said:

"We went to the pond where I went for the first time. We saw turtles there!"

"Pond? Is it a little far from here?"

My Husband said:

"Yeah, we like exploring the new place which we have never been to, don't you?"

"Exactly!"

My Son answered.

I told them:

"Good for you! If I went with you, you could not go such a new place. How to play is quite different between Dad and me. I can't help restricting your activities because I always have to do housework and I worry about time."

I thought it is sometimes good for us to do somethings respectively.

My Husband can let our Son play more actively, and I can let a daughter do housework well.

  1. Hello Kumi-san,

It sounds as if you had a busy day doing housework with your Daughter. It must have been fun for your Son and Husband to view the turtles. I never owned fish as a child, which is probably a good thing as I am sure they would not have lived very long had I done so. The one advantage to doing housework is it is a good excuse to eat sweet thing afterwards. Well that's my excuse for eating sweet things :).

Here is a list of some of the issues found in the post:

    Part 1:

    This line:
"I want to ride my bicycle. Let's go with me!"

    Should be:
"I want to ride my bicycle. Let's go, come with me!"

    This line:
He asked my Husband to go out.

    Should be:
He asked my Husband to go out with him.

    This line:
My 5-year-old daughter was still having breakfast.

    Should be:
My 5-year-old Daughter was still having breakfast.

Reason: It's your specific Daughter and not a daughter in general and so it is better to capitalize.

    This line:
"Can you do me a favor? I am going to wash the fish tank today. Could you help me?"

    Should be:
"Can you do me a favor? I am going to clean the fish tank today. Could you help me?"

Reason: Although your sentence is not grammatically wrong, for reasons I am not sure of when referring to a fish tank in English we almost always say clean the fish tank rather than wash. It's not a big issue and I am sure there a lots of people that don't follow this rule, but it is worth noting.

    This line:
She was glad to hear that.

Question: The above sentence is it your Daughter that is pleased to be cleaning the fish tank or are you pleased that she would help you. If it was your Daughter I would rewrite as:

She was glad she could help me.

If it was you that was glad of her response then I would rewrite as:

I was glad to hear that.

    This line:
I started washing dishes, then cleaned stairs, the Japanese room, the washroom, and the living room.

Question: Is "the Japanese room" a room that is designed in the style of traditional old style Japanese room?

  2. Part 2:

    This line:
    She started changing water.

    Should be:
    She started changing the water.

    This line:
"Pour water softly so that fish will not be surprised."

    Should be:
"Pour the water slowly so that the fish will not be surprised."

    This line:
    "Softly, gently."

    Should be:
    "Slowly, gently."

    This line:
"OK, we finished. Wow! The fish tank became clean! Thank you my Daughter!"

    Should be:
"OK, we finished. Wow! The fish tank is clean! Thank you my Daughter!"

    This line:
My Son and Husband have just come home.

    Should be:
My Son and Husband had just come home.

    Or:

My Son and Husband came home.

    This line:
"Yeah, we like exploring the new place which we have never been to, don't you?"

    Should be:
"Yeah, we like exploring the new places which we have never been to, don't you?"

    This line:
"Good for you! If I went with you, you could not go such a new place. How to play is quite different between Dad and me. I can't help restricting your activities because I always have to do housework and I worry about time."

    Should be:
"Good for you! If I had gone with you, you could not go to such new places. The way you and I play is quite different. I can't help restricting your activities because I always have to do housework and I worry about time."

    This line:
I thought it is sometimes good for us to do somethings respectively.

    Should be:
I thought that it is sometimes good for us to do some things (independently/differently) from each other.

Note: Although the word something is one word when you want to pluralize it, it turns into two separate words "some things". Not sure why.

    This line:
My Husband can let our Son play more actively, and I can let a daughter do housework well.

    Should be:
My Husband can let our Son play more actively, and I can let our Daughter do housework well.
